today was All Saints Day, so i thought i would share the Sacred Heart i recently painted. i wasn’t raised Catholic & though i have long been drawn to the lives, experiences, & words of the saints, the Sacred Heart hasn’t really ever been at the forefront of my awareness…then something happened this past year – the image of the Sacred Heart began coming to mind often with a sense of familiarity & closeness, like a calling toward, from simply appearing in my mind out of nowhere to seeing the image in posts online, in other art, etc. i’m not sure why, other than a gut feeling that it is a response to what is happening currently with the abuse of power alongside rhetoric that is contrary to love, to the love so embodied in the image of the Sacred Heart. the love for our neighbor, which includes everyone, is a call to boundless love, sacrificial love, a burning fierce compassionate love willing to endure suffering to be in solidarity with, heal, & relieve others of their suffering. in Buddhism this is the bodhisattva path, & one may say, the path of saints. we may never embody this as Jesus did or as the saints aspired to & have, but we can with each breath, each step, each word, do our part to participate in love, to practice embodying the fierce compassion needed in our time, to act as an antidote to the cruelty, harm, & destruction we are seeing by those in power towards the most vulnerable.
may it be so.
