when we look at the strategies of fascism, authoritarianism, of tyrants, it is important to remember that it doesn’t have to be this way. cruelty is a choice.
just sitting here, wishing that the current people in power had read this quote when they had hit midlife. is it too late now that they are old fascists? can their over-dominant egos be shed, allowing space for a deeper connection to life?
“Destiny itself is like a wonderful wide tapestry in which every thread is guided by an unspeakably tender hand, placed beside another thread, and held and carried by a hundred others.”
~ Rainer Maria Rilke
may i remind you, just in case you aren’t feeling it in this moment, just in case you haven’t been told this recently?
you are loved and you are worthy of love.
why?
not because some government, or persons who are temporarily in power say you are or are not worthy, but simply because you exist and are here.
a note of reminder to all of us & any of us who may feel targeted in this moment from a government who is supposed to protect us, uphold our rights, & provide opportunity for a full flourishing life. no matter what those in power or their sycophants proclaim with their feverish intention to diminish or promote despair:
you are life.
no one, no government, no earthly powers can take the truth of who you are away.
you are life. a beautiful, diverse, unique, expression of love & life itself, worthy of the full flowering of love & life in all its ways.
i don’t use the term “evil” lightly or frequently. i prefer to view things as beneficial or harmful, with the harm coming from a place of delusion. but sometimes the depth of the delusion, of the darkness & depravity, with such indifference to harm & suffering from the powers that be, & worse – the glee in its perpetration that we are seeing, needs a word that cuts through to wake us up to the horror of the situation. the word “evil” seems appropriate.
may the Love that is most ancient, unbound by time & space – the only true antidote to the evil we are seeing – find a home in our hearts, that we may embody such love, acting on its invitation to end harm & heal this world without exception or exclusion.
darkness provides the opportunity for us to shine our light. exclusion is our opportunity to include those kept out. fear is our opportunity to forge ahead anyway with courage. destruction provides the opportunity for rebuilding better. obstruction provides us the opportunity to use our imaginations and get creative. old ways falling away, provide the opportunity for renewal. and hatred rearing its ugly head is an opportunity for the beauty of love to come forth, for us to offer ourselves to love fully, embodying love for a world in deep and desperate need.
may we rise to meet this moment for the benefit of all.
who would you exclude from government protections, from liberty, freedom, equity, & justice?
going further, who would you exclude from your empathy, mercy, compassion, generosity, & love?
that’s where our work is. that’s where the heart needs to open. where we would exclude our love, where we would exclude from the protections & provisions of government.
allowing others to be targeted, marginalized, & oppressed, is permission for the same to be done to you & those you have included in your love.
our devotion must be to love & to loving each other, to non-harming, to healing & the well being of life around us. the religious, the spiritual life, seekers, & devotees have a responsibility to hold a mirror up to the present & ask, “is this love? is this worthy of the gift of this sacred, & passing life?”
if it isn’t, then must call it out & inspire a way forward in love that is inclusive, & to & for the benefit of all.
