i got this tattoo prior to the election this past fall, knowing in my gut i would need this reminder written on my body to support myself & my practice in the times ahead. i had the same feeling in my gut that i had in 2016 – that he would win, despite all the dire warnings of what it would mean for us, especially those he had/has so often targeted. i had the feeling that it would be bad, far worse than the first time & perhaps far worse than people were thinking. with all that is happening, today, i’ve spent some time looking at this tattoo, reading it over & over.
may love, the source of all life, wake us up & transform hearts. may all that is love come together to push back against the cruelty, lift up what is true & good, & heal the harm.
60 Minutes’ investigation stated 75% of the 238 men snatched up and sent to the El Salvadorian gulag without due process and in violation of a District Judge’s stay/non-transport order, had no criminal record. Bloomberg’s investigation states upwards of 90% don’t have criminal records. a portion of these men also have/had legal status to be in the US.
at this point, the US Govt under Trump has no intention of bringing them back and has pushed back against any order to do so – even in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal resident, father of three (two of which have special needs) who the US says they sent to El Salvador mistakenly.
the US also in a recent brief to the US Supreme Court shared their potential goal of doing the same for US Citizens who are criminals. however, with no regard for laws and a two page statement letter from Secretary Marco Rubio counting as evidence against Mahmoud Khalil for deportation (with no other evidence of criminality) who is to say who/what citizens the US can/will say are criminals and thereby can be deported to another country’s prison system with no future of coming back?
friends, this IS fascism. now is the time to step into love and nonviolently push back. call your Reps and Senators nonstop, speak out, and protest while we still have the right to do so.
today is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week for Christians. i grew up with these stories, but it wasn’t until fairly recently that i started to read a fresh perspective on just how revolutionary Jesus’ journey & teachings were/are, especially in regards to upending our personal & institutional ideas around power & empire. a message that can benefit us (& challenge us) even now. here’s a such a take on the “triumphal entry” Palm Sunday story.
we must maintain vigilance, so we don’t allow ourselves to become victims of what i am calling the degradation of normality. which is to say the degradation of what we consider good, what we hold dear as our principles & integrity. it is easy, in the overwhelm tactic of fascism, to lose ourselves in time, into a fog of unawareness & indifference, allowing the destruction of our institutions & immense harm towards others. we wake up one day saying it is okay for a particular group to be targeted (for whatever the offered reason) as if we’ve taken a great gulp from a cup of amnesia, forgetting what history has taught us – that fascism’s appetite doesn’t stop with one group. there is an exercise we can do regularly as an antidote to such poison. it is the exercise of empathy. how would we feel if we or our loved ones were targeted? it is an important, vital exercise, because with fascism, eventually one day it will be our loved ones & us.
this is also a difficult watch, but please don’t turn away. history will not be kind to this moment or our country. as 60 Minutes reports, no criminal records, domestic or international could be found for 75% of these Venezuelan men who were taken by ICE & disappeared to an El Salvador gulag with no due process. what is being done is immoral at the very least & if not completely illegal, pushes the boundaries of our laws & constitution. although perpetrated under the false pretense of making our country safer, these actions endanger us all & promote a climate of fear.
the continuing suffering, immense suffering, being endured disproportionately by Palestinian children especially, must be faced. we must allow our hearts to be broken. i share this in no way to diminish the suffering of the Israeli families affected by the horrors of 10/7, or the hostages & their families, which 60 Minutes touches on in this episode & devoted a segment to in the previous week’s episode. the sheer magnitude of mass death & destruction that continues though can’t be ignored. may we see all life as sacred, valuable, & worthy of our love.
this is a difficult to watch. please bear witness with care.
“An age is called ‘dark’ not because the light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it.” ~ James Michener
yesterday’s #HandsOff marches, 5 million strong, will help people see the light. such visibility of resistance can buoy us here at home, give a clear message to this administration that we are united in pushing back against fascism, & tell our neighbors & our allies that we haven’t given up on our country, we haven’t given up on democracy.
may this movement, committed to democracy, continue to grow & provide resistance.
