this is also a difficult watch, but please don’t turn away. history will not be kind to this moment or our country. as 60 Minutes reports, no criminal records, domestic or international could be found for 75% of these Venezuelan men who were taken by ICE & disappeared to an El Salvador gulag with no due process. what is being done is immoral at the very least & if not completely illegal, pushes the boundaries of our laws & constitution. although perpetrated under the false pretense of making our country safer, these actions endanger us all & promote a climate of fear.

may hearts open & may we return to sanity.

the continuing suffering, immense suffering, being endured disproportionately by Palestinian children especially, must be faced. we must allow our hearts to be broken. i share this in no way to diminish the suffering of the Israeli families affected by the horrors of 10/7, or the hostages & their families, which 60 Minutes touches on in this episode & devoted a segment to in the previous week’s episode. the sheer magnitude of mass death & destruction that continues though can’t be ignored. may we see all life as sacred, valuable, & worthy of our love.

this is a difficult to watch. please bear witness with care. 

may all be safe & free from suffering.

it is so vitally important, when facing a spiritual crisis as we are, to bear witness to suffering. to be courageous enough to look clear eyed into the darkness of indifference, destruction, & harm, & allow it to break open our hearts. to allow our hearts to break open, to allow our hearts to be moved by the suffering we see, is to allow for empathy. we shine our light into the darkness. this is what makes us human instead of monsters. there are a lot of monsters right now, who unable to move through their own fears, losing their humanity in greed & abusive power, are causing immense harm. let us who are aware, open-hearted & brave, live now as the future we hope to see – a future of embodying love, guided by wisdom & principles of equity & justice, filled with hope, working towards peace.

some highlights from Senator Cory Booker’s tour de force floor speech still ongoing after 20 hours. this moment shouldn’t be underestimated as simply performative. of course it is performative in the same way protests are & boycotts are & speeches & sit ins are, etc.

but these are the tools of nonviolent action, of shining a spotlight onto the existential crisis we are in. words have power! words can speak truth to power! words can highlight harm, convict hearts, galvanize community, & call upon us to put love into action w/ fierce compassion.
