hello friends – 

i want to share three verses i wrote a few years ago, that have become part of my morning practice along with prayers and reciting mantras, prior to sitting meditation.

i wrote these verses for myself at a time when i was trying to find balance in my capacity to be with life, holding all of what life brings with love, yet also having the wisdom and ability to let go, to set an intention to live a life of love that is also free flowing and not grasping, to have a practice that i could engage in at the start of each day. spoiler alert – still using these!

i hope they may be of benefit to you and your practice as well.

may hearts open and may wisdom arise.

may we have 

the capacity of heart 

to hold the entire world 

and all of life,

and may we have

the wisdom of mind

to let go.

may we hold 

all of life with love,

and with love, 

may we let go.

may we align with love, 

may we abide in love, 

may we embody love,

may we let go into 

the flow of love.

may it be so.

such a profound teaching.

especially when so many of us feel lacking in worth, in a culture that so often sees aggression and violence as the answer to the world’s problems.

we have what we need within us to be of benefit, to be a force for love and healing in our world. 

a world of love, of kindness, and peace is possible, and it begins within the rawness we regularly avoid, our own tender hearts. and then outward into our lives and relationships, and even further into the world, this gentleness ripples.

may hearts open in all their tenderness and may wisdom arise.

our vow, our practice, our path can be one of love.

vast, luminous love, expansive love that includes all, even the dark and cold spaces we tend to avoid. love the shadow into the light. be the moon reflecting the light of the sun in the dark of night. 

imagine the impact, imagine the benefit, imagine the healing we can bring into our relationship with ourselves, with others, with the world if we choose a path of love, if we choose to embody love. 

love it all!

what we are witnessing is devastating. please don’t lose sight of love. please don’t fall under the influence of those who work tirelessly in their violence toward harm and destruction, whether under an ideology of terrorism, or under the flag of nations.

let us not be taken in by the noise and chaos. let us settle ourselves, mindful of our breath and thoughts, vigilant in keeping our hearts open and tender.

with awareness, we know that anti-Semitism and the violence it brings can never be justified. likewise, we know that mass death, destruction and starvation, including and especially the lives of children is also never justified, nor is it self-defense.

trust your heart and conscience. 

there will always be those who choose the path of violence and destruction, who prey on fears and call for the worst of our nature to arise. this path is delusion and doesn’t lead to safety, security, or peace. such a path only leads to suffering.

some would have us forget, for the benefit of their own interest, that we are all interdependent, that “there is just one flesh to wound” (Hafiz). 

remember, remember who we are!

we can choose differently, each of us. we can choose to take refuge in a clear, calm, and steady mind, an open heart, and our practice. with a strong back and open heart, we can vow to take our seat or rise in action, with the full force of love. to the benefit of all beings, so that all beings can be free from suffering. 

may it be so.

the work of healing and transformation begins within our own hearts and minds. we can set forth on a path with practices that help us along the way.

in Buddhism, the practices of mindfulness awareness meditation (shamatha vipashyana) and lovingkindness meditation (metta) among others are practiced to steady the mind and open the heart. we work with our own mind to become steady, aware, and see clearly, with our own hearts to soften and open in our capacity to be with life, both practices to unravel harmful patterns in our relationship to ourselves, others, and the world, so that we may reduce suffering for all.

may we all find practices and a path that prepares us to be luminous in our lives with love and a force for healing in the world.
